Set in a remodeled garage, this is literally a hole in the wall but its eclectic decor, spanning the 1940s to ’60s, is charming and quirky. However, we found the food on a par with the finest gourmet spots and without the high prices.

The menu is small but quite varied, featuring traditional Mexican dishes prepared to perfection. Half orders are available for those who can’t make up their minds. We tried a number of half orders but these stand out: machaca de camarón — excellent!, molletes with savory pork chilorio, and chilaquiles de flor de calabaza con chile habanero. (My personal chef hopes to recreate this at home.)

Very good coffee, typical Guadalajara chocomilk with cinnamon, and freshly squeezed tangerine juice took our meal over the top.
